Kierkegaard and subjective time

In the ethical stage, repetition assumes the form of the universal norms of conduct: instead of chasing the elusive moments of esthetical pleasure, we rely upon the certitude of repetition. Repetition is a sign of maturity when the subject has learned to avoid the twin traps of impatient hope in the New and of nostalgic memory of the Old: we find satisfaction in the return of the Same, like the happy marital couple who has overcome the yearning for exotic adventures, yet is still able to avoid melancholic remembrance of past passions.

The deadlock which pushes Kierkegaard toward the next (religious) stage is of course the experience of how, at this stage too, repetition is impossible: the ideal point at which we overcome the futile yearning for the New without falling into a nostalgic backward-directed attitude, is never present as such. The structure of subjective time is such that, from hopeful expectations, from "too early," we are thrown all of a sudden into melancholic remembrance into "too late." In other words, the self-referential paradox consists in the fact that the ideal point between hope and memory is present precisely and only in the mode of hope or memory: in youthful zeal we hope to find peace in a beloved spouse one never gets tired of; in old age we remember the happy time fulfilled with the reliable rhythm of repetition.

Flirted with you all my life.

On December 25, 2009, Vic Chesnutt died from an overdose of muscle relaxants that had left him in a coma in an Athens hospital. In the 2009 interview with Terry Gross, while discussing the song "Flirted with You All My Life", he said, "You know, I've attempted suicide three or four times. It didn't take."

Notable immortal species include the Turritopsis nutricula, a jellyfish which after becoming a sexually mature adult, can transform itself back into a polyp using the cell conversion process of transdifferentiation.

Turritopsis nutricula repeats this cycle, meaning that it may have an indefinite lifespan.

"I believe it is the increasing wealth of the western world, which is fundamentally my main subject, is in the end the thing which will do as all in. the gaze of the Other

20100823-DSC_0796

Jean Paul Sartre saw the gaze as the battleground for the self to define and redefine itself; we become aware of our self as subject only when confronted with the gaze of the Other and become aware of our self as object. The gaze of the Other is outside our immediate control and the way the gaze objectifies us robs us of our freedom as a subject: "insofar as I am the object of values which come to qualify me without my being able to act on this qualification or even to know it, I am enslaved. Why my desktop is never tidy

"My problem with classifications is that they don’t last; hardly have I finished putting things into an order before that order is obsolete. Like everyone else, I presume, I am sometimes seized by a mania for arranging things. The sheer number of the things needing to be arranged and the near-impossibility of distributing them according to any truly satisfactory criteria means that I never finally manage it, that the arrangements I end up with are temporary and vague, and hardly any more effective that the original anarchy"

"What makes me sad is my creeping awareness that, sooner or later - sooner that I am ready to admit - I will integrate myself into a new community, forgetting and forgotten by the place that now means so much to me. In short , what makes me sad is the awareness that I will lose my desire for (what is now) my home."

White rim with Warsaw theme (beamer ~ latex)

Problem:

Notice the white rim appearing on the left. A quick (but not the most elegant) solution to this is to edit the theme file used by Warsaw.

Open the tex\latex\beamer\themes\outer directory and (after backing up), edit:

beamerouterthemeshadow.sty

In the

\defbeamertemplate*{frametitle}{shadow theme}

block, find the following line:

\hskip-\Gm@lmargin\hbox{%

and add an hskip, for me -0.05ex worked:

"On the one hand we have this so called rise of fundamentalism and so on, but something very interesting started to happen in the last years. Did you notice how a certain very vulgar direct materialism, attacking religion as stupidity, immoral laws, is gaining also at the same time extreme popularity. The three big stars even for, of course us, are originally Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and now also Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris. Its kind of an extremely vulgur reductionist materialism claiming religion is basically stupid, ethically hurtfull and so on. I think more and more that these are in a way two sides of the same coin, that we don't have to choose between these two." - SZ

When the child was a child,
it didn’t know that it was a child,
everything was soulful,
and all souls were one.

[...]

How can it be that I, who I am,
didn’t exist before I came to be,
and that, someday, I, who I am,
will no longer be who I am?

When the child was a child,
it awoke once in a strange bed,
and now does so again and again.
Many people, then, seemed beautiful,
and now only a few do, by sheer luck.

According to the “Mosquitoes” chapter in Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, by Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904), mosquitoes are seen as reincarnations of the dead, condemned by the errors of their former lives to the condition of Jiki-ketsu-gaki, or "blood-drinking pretas".

We have a deficit of wonder right now

Tom Waits: "This is what's wrong with the world. Everything is explained now. We live in an age when you say casually to somebody 'What's the story on that?' and they can run to the computer and tell you within five seconds. That's fine, but sometimes I'd just as soon continue wondering. We have a deficit of wonder right now."

Humor in Operating Systems Books

In "Operating System Concepts", (Avi Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, Greg Gagne) while explaining the notion of multiprogramming:
  • "This idea is common in other life situations. A lawyer does not work for only one client at time. While one case is waiting to go to trial or have papers typed, the lawyer can work on another case. If she has enough clients, the lawyer will never be idle for lack of work. (Idle lawyers tend to become politicians, so there is a certain social value in keeping lawyers busy.)"
In "Modern Operating Systems", (Andrew Tanenbaum) while referring to the "little research" being done in deadlock detection:
  • "None of it is even remotely practical in real systems.
Its main function seems to be keeping otherwise
unemployed graph theorists off the streets."

The Kerkis Font Family (Latex pack good, TTF bad)

The kerkis font family

http://iris.math.aegean.gr/kerkis/

produces some great results, especially on latex documents and especially in greek. So you just include the kerkis package in your latex document (\usepackage{kerkis}) and you get something as pretty as this:

But beware: This font, when installed as a TTF in windows (that is, pasted in the windows/fonts directory) can cause the gdi plus windows xp library to crash! After installing the fonts yesterday, applications such as YzDock, objectDock and similar ones kept crashing on start-up. Then I noticed ms office 2008 word crashing, and finally photoshop CS2. These apps all crashed on gdiplus.dll, except word which crashed on some other dll. After a few system restore attempts, msconfig configurations, I thankfully ended up in this thread, of a forum. Yes, I had installed a third-party font. So, after a good laugh, I thought that I should warn people getting similar errors...
I want to make clear that this is about the truetype fonts installed in the windows/fonts directory and has nothing to do with the latex package which works great. If you want to install the true type fonts then do so, they can be easily removed if similar problems occcur ( go to windows/fonts directory and delete them )

Crooked Tree

My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. "Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?" they asked me the other day. I told them this story:

In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, "Look at me; I'm tall and I'm straight and I'm handsome. Look at you; you're all crooked and bend over. No one wants to look at you." And they grew up in that forest together.

And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, "Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest." So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper.

And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.

Makes you wonder

1a
1b
2
3a
3b
4

Mr. 1 thought that "Gandhi-ism and all it stands for will, sooner or later, have to be grappled with and finally crushed". Also, that "It is alarming and also nauseating to see Mr Gandhi, a seditious Middle-Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir of a type well-known in the East, striding half-naked up the steps of the Vice-regal palace...to parley on equal terms with the representative of the King-Emperor". And: the apartheid state.

No need to talk about Mr. 2, I think. Quoting his democratical and peace-loving words "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves", "Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac" etc.

Mr. 3 let us all know about the threat of the ManBearPig . Also he wants us to know that we will save the world if we unplug the TV while we sleep [but travelling with his private jet(s) is ok].

To Mr. 4 we should bow.

Mr. 1 was voted greatest Briton. Mr 2 and 3 got a nobel peace price. Mr 4 didn`t.
